Verified against CIGRE TB 880.
CIGRE Technical Brochure 880 (2022) is the gold-standard reference for cable ampacity verification — 17 case studies with results to 10 significant figures. CableSketch Pro runs every case the engine supports, and we publish every deviation. Re-run on every release.
Results.
Tolerance is per-source: CIGRE cases require <2 % on ampacity (the brochure publishes 10 sig figs); NEC cases allow <3 % since the table values are rounded. The deviation column is green when within tolerance, red when out. Click a case name to download its PDF report.

Validation methodology.
Each TB 880 case is translated into a v1 CableSketch Pro project file by hand, with the case parameters mapped to engine inputs. The engine's reported ampacity is compared against the published value to four decimal places. Soil resistivity, ambient temperature, and cable construction are taken verbatim from the brochure. Where the brochure specifies a parameter the engine does not yet expose (e.g. specific shield bonding configurations), the case is marked SKIP and listed in the table above with a reason.
Cases not yet covered.
Cases 11–17 require engine features not present in v1 — IEC 60287 dielectric modeling, transient ratings, FEM, and pipe-type or GIL constructions. Phase 2 (Q3 2026) will cover IEC dielectric losses and cyclic ratings, picking up Cases 11, 13, and 14.
Every case file is open. Browse the validation suite on GitHub, or download the project files from your CableSketch Pro account and run them yourself.
